Mumbai - Trishna

Spring 2008
Frank's view
'arguably the best seafood in India'

Tucked away in the back streets of Mumbai is one of the city’s best and most popular restaurants.

The covers are crammed in - benches instead of chairs and little legroom.  You really are pinned against the table.  The walls are decorated with that horrible 1970’s fad, ’Anaglypta wallpaper’.  Mirrors line the walls and a garland clad, Hindu god has pride of place at the far end of the restaurant.

Order crab, lobster or prawns and they will be prepared anyway you choose –

Butter, pepper & garlic, wine sauce, chilly garlic, Schezuan, Chinese green sauce, hot black garlic sauce, ginger garlic sauce, green pepper sauce, Kalimiri, green masala etc., etc.  The choice is almost endless, and the produce excellent.

We opted for medium sized crab masala (500 rupees), Hyderabad pomfret (400 rupees) and king prawn tandoori (470 rupees).

Cool and style is quickly trashed as seafood shells and sauce splatter your clothes.  Don’t wear your best Prada and don’t resist as the waiter ties a plastic baby bib firmly round your neck.

This really is a restaurant worth visiting but booking is essential.
