Zurich - Hotel Sedartis
Spring 2007
Frank's view
Hotel Sedatris is not actually located in Zurich. It is located around 10 minutes by train from Zurich in a suburb called Thalwil. It seems that securing a hotel room in Zurich is consistently very difficult, particularly in the 5 star hotels.
On a recent business visit to Zurich, a colleague and I ended up in Hotel Sedartis, which initially we were furious about, as we had been led to believe we were staying in a hotel located at bahnhofstrasse16 in the centre of Zurich, which, oddly enough, is immediately next door to Zurich’s Prada store. Bahnhofstrasse 16, Zurich is home to a financial institution. Bahnhofstrasse 16, Thalwil, is where you will find Hotel Sedartis.
The hotel is new and very conveniently located directly across the road from the railway station. The Swiss railway network is incredibly efficient and there are trains running more frequently between Thalwil and Zurich central than you generally find on many parts of the London Underground. Rarely does one have to wait for longer than 10 minutes for a train in either direction. Swiss trains are also, unlike UK trains, very clean and safe. It became clear very quickly that the owners of this hotel had been astute.
The hotel is totally geared towards business guests. Do not take your wife or girlfriend for a romantic weekend.
The hotel would probably claim that the rooms are influenced by Philippe Starck but in reality it's more a case of “wannabe Ikea”. This isn’t a criticism as, at a rate of approximately CHf 230 (approximately US$200) per night for a large room, the hotel is good value. One criticism I do have is the huge “mural type” art on one wall of the room. Mine was something to do with an Indian artist from the early 19th century. It did completely dominate the ambience of the bedroom.
Hotel Sedartis claims to have an excellent restaurant (although in Switzerland excellent cuisine seems to be hard to find) and, certainly breakfast was very acceptable.
Hotel Sedartis promotes itself as a hotel “For business, culture and fine food”. I don’t know about the latter two but as a base for a business visit to Zurich, the hotel works well.
