Ho Chi Minh City - Saigon Park Hyatt
Winter 2006
Frank's view
'Better than home.'
This was arguably the best hotel room we have ever stayed in anywhere, and absolutely the best in value for money terms, bar none.
The Park Hyatt Saigon is a new hotel, which is clearly a strong statement of belief in the future of Vietnam, by Hyatt. It is hard to believe that the hotel is not losing a great deal of money with its current charging structure.
We booked a Park Suite, via American Express, at a rate of US$226, and were upgraded to a Park Executive King Suite. It was stunning, 110 sq metres, including a sitting room with a table large enough to dine six. The attention to detail was exceptional. The suite was truly faultless.
The hotel is located, centrally in Ho Chi Minh City, so walking is a totally viable option, and indeed the best option, for sight seeing. Directly opposite is Hotel Caravelle. This hotel has a roof top bar on the 24th floor which is an excellent location for an early evening cocktail, whilst you admire the city from on high.
The Park Hyatt Saigon has two restaurants, one informal and more suited to lunch, the other a better venue for dinner. Opera is the Italian style eatery with pizzas and a large buffet selection. Square One offers both Vietnamese and Western dishes. Neither restaurant is expensive.
Our bill for a twenty four hour stay, including accommodation, breakfast, lunch and dinner (both with fine wines) ran into tens of millions, approximately 12,000,000. Fortunately, it was 12m Vietnamese Dong. In real money it equated to around US$700. A bargain if ever there was one.
