London - Quilon

Frank's view
'good food, shame about the decor'

Having recently returned from India and a three week adventure through some of the nation’s finest cuisine, it was time to check out the Indian restaurant in London, which was being lauded everywhere we visited – well everywhere that was owned by the Taj Hotel Group, the owners of Quilon in London.

This Michelin starred restaurant in Buckingham Gate has also received praise from the London critics, so with taste buds still tuned to the spices of the Goans and Mughals, we embarked upon another culinary expedition.

Our waiter suggested that he choose a banquet for the table, a party of four.

The food was excellent:

An array of starters included Mini Masala Dosa, and spiced chicken.

To follow we shared sea bass, lamb shank and a Chicken Kori Gassi accompanied by lemon rice and deep fried okra.

The letdown was the ambience, more Garfunkel’s than a South Indian culinary temple.  A central salad bar would not have been out of place.

The restaurant was quiet in an era when other top London diners are booking weeks in advance.

If you are in search of top Indian cuisine it doesn’t come better than this, although check out the nearby Cinnamon Club in Westminster.
