Noosa - Sheraton
Summer 2007
Frank's view
Head north out of Brisbane along the Bruce Highway for around 100 km and you will begin to see signs for Noosa Heads.
The Sheraton Noosa hotel sits in a prime position by the water and the numerous boats sitting motionless upon it, disturbed only by the occasional ripple of a passing motor boat.
The small town ( really just one street – Noosa Parade) has a lot of Aussie charm. It is a real Aussie holiday resort for Aussies. The beach is long, clean and packed with families from the city (Brisbane). It’s an Aussie equivalent of Bournemouth in the UK, a weekend retreat for the wealthy who have their day boats moored beside their houses and apartments and a summer destination for the less well off who holiday once a year.
There are two particularly good places to eat. For breakfast and lunch, head to Bistrot C on the beach, where you can sit and gaze at the ocean, your view consistently interrupted by the endless flow of people meandering by. The place for dinner is Berardo’s, seemingly a favourite for middle aged wealthy ladies to entertain their gigolo toyboys, either that or Oedipus was dining at the next table.
The Sheraton Noosa is certainly the only place to stay. It sits right by Noosa Parade, having a gate conveniently placed to walk out on to the Parade. Both restaurants are minutes a way.
The Sheraton Noosa claims to be Noosa’s only 5 star hotel. I’m sure this is the case, but it is not a 5 star hotel by today’s standards. It is tired and stuck in the 1970s. The rooms are vast but certainly not luxurious and the hotel seems to be a major corporate retreat centre. The complex is built around the swimming pool and the hotel bar is well placed by the river.
If you are travelling around northern Queensland and fancy a day or two in an Aussie seaside resort, this camel can think of worse ways of passing its time. The two day stay was enjoyable but, like a couple of pina coladas, just right. By Monday morning it was time to move on to something a little more refined and subtle.
