London - Nobu (Berkeley St)
Summer 2007
Frank's view
Nobu Berkeley Street opened two years ago in 2005 with a ‘No Booking / Walk In” policy. Within two months the chaos was so great they relented and introduced table reservations. People were not prepared to hang around the bar for hours waiting for a table.
Nobu Berkeley Street is more informal than Nobu Park Lane but the menu and prices are fundamentally the same.
There is a large bar downstairs, the restaurant upstairs. We were fortunate enough to walk in off the street and secure places at the sushi bar, which was fascinating as we watched the team of (largely Japanese) chefs prepare sushi and sashimi. Their concentration was intense. Hardly surprising as we watched their knives slide through tuna and salmon with terrifying ease.
A feast for two, consisting of tiradito, new style sashimi, tempura shrimps, black cod in miso, wagyu beef and squid stuffed with aubergine costs around £150 including a large bamboo of cold saki.
This camel will not hear a word said against Nobu. The cuisine is truly exceptional and never fails to delight.
On a final note, the gents loo resembles a set from Pulp Fiction with its blood splattered wall. Extraordinary.
