St Tropez - Nikki Beach
Spring 2008
Frank's view
'looking tired'
Over recent years, we’ve wandered along the seashore of Pampelone, pondering whether Nikki Beach will still be in existence.
Positioned towards the Ramateulle end of Pampelone, Nikki Beach is only open from the end of May / beginning of June to mid September.
Located a couple of hundred metres or so, back from the shore line, Nikki Beach is divided into two areas, the bar with sunbathing and pool, and the restaurant.
The restaurant is good, and unlike the bar / bed area, welcomes children.
When Nikki Beach rocks, Bacchus rises.
However, don’t bother turning up at Nikki Beach until mid afternoon unless you have Robinson Crusoe syndrome. The place comes to life between around 4pm and 7pm during July and August, and not every day. A group of us visited on a cloudy August afternoon last year and Nikki Beach was very quiet.
The sun bed arrangements are for the greedy or intimate. Double beds line the side of the pool and, for those with particularly naughty intentions, there are four posters, complete with drapes, in discreet, secluded locations.
The Nikki Beach Group, with establishments in Marrakech, Miami and Marbella, is particularly proud of its music. A drums and bass version of St Germain, the sounds thump out from the many speakers positioned all around the complex.
The staff are all young, pretty and dressed in white. The clientele are also young (younger than nearby Club 55), pretty and dressed in nothing but tiny thongs, both men and woman. They are also extremely gauche. It's like an Oligarch Offspring convention.
Enter either from the beach or from the road, and make use of Nikki Beach’s valet parking service.
The atmosphere at Nikki Beach seems to be very much weather influenced (don’t turn up on a cloudy or wet day). We’ve turned up there on a number of occasions during high season over the last few years, and it has certainly not been buzzing.
I guess the safest time, if you want the hyped Nikki Beach vibe, is a hot Saturday or Sunday, late afternoon, in August.
