Goa - The Leela
Spring 2008
Frank's view
'better than the Taj but vast and impersonal'
We didn’t stay here but visited the hotel and had a good look around.
Most rooms are located by the river, which weaves its way through the resort. They have small balconies, wide enough to sit, but not sufficient room for lounging. Sunbathing is therefore limited to the beach, unless you have one of the few villas with a private plunge pool.
The hotel lobby and bar area is vast. Leela describes it as being inspired by a temple, but the reality is a pretty soulless temple.
The hotel has cleverly created its own section of private beach, unlike the Taj Exotica, which has no private beach facility.
The beach side restaurant, Susegado, is very good for lunch.
Leela changed hands in early 2008 and is now managed by the Kempinski Group.
The Camel stayed at the Taj Exotica and was not impressed. Leela would have been a preferable option, but a little post trip research uncovered a few options which I wish I had been aware of earlier.
I can’t comment on the hotels but, if you are planning to visit Goa check out Siolim House, Pousada Tauma and Nilaya Hermitage.
