St Jean Cap Ferrat - La Voile D'Or

Sitting a few metres from the some of the planet’s most expensive real estate on Chemin de Sainte-Hospice, La Voile D’Or has THE position in St Jean Cap Ferrat but not the prestige status, which belongs to the Grand Hotel du Cap.

La Voile D’Or overlooks the St Jean marina with views beyond to Eze village which is perched 1300 feet above the Mediterranean. The swimming pool is at the far end of the restaurant by the sea and the bar terrace sits along the side of the hotel overlooking the town.

This is a Four-Star establishment with a proclaimed gourmet restaurant. The menu, as is often the case in France, pushes one towards the ‘Set Menu’ of the day. A 5 course banquet was priced at €90 whereas a quick calculation of the various dishes bought separately from the á la carte menu would have taken the bill to around €200.

The starter, rocket leaves with carpaccio of truffle and Granny Smith apples, was €60 alone and very disappointing. Indeed the whole meal was a let down; unusually large portions but lacking in subtlety and flavours.

It was a Sunday evening in August and La Voile D’Or restaurant was almost empty. I won’t be back.
