Lan Chile

Spring 2007
Frank's view

As part of a One World Explorer trip we flew from LA to Santiago and then to New York in Lan Chile First Class.  It was an interesting experience.

The 767 was old…very old.

The First Class cabin was a relic from the seventies, if not earlier.

Watching the other passengers board was fascinating with a number resembling characters one associates with South American bandit movies.

The service was very friendly but very chaotic.

The flight touched down in Lima for an hour or so in the middle of the night which was bizarre as we were left wandering around Lima airport at around 3am.

As the flight approached Santiago we hit turbulence and the cabin crew panicked.  Oddly none of the passengers seemed concerned.  They frantically began to clear the tables before abandoning the task and strapping themselves in for a bumpy landing.  They failed to notice one of the other elderly passengers in First Class who was asleep in his fully reclined 1970s sleep seat.

The extraordinary thing was that the crew seemed to have no idea that the flight was close to landing and the announcement by the captain of “10 minutes to landing” coupled with the turbulence created the resultant mayhem!

Don’t fly Lan Chile unless you really have to.  However, as a one off, it is entertaining.
