Rome - Hotel Eden

Spring 2007
Frank's view

In planning a trip to Rome, our first choice was to return to Hotel de Russie.  Unfortunately the hotel was fully booked, largely by the rock band REM, we subsequently discovered.  We sought advice from American Express Travel who recommended Hotel Eden which is part of their “Leading Hotels of the World” programme.

The luxury hotel is another one of those grandiose 19th century palaces.  It is as you would expect.  Stuffy but efficient.  Formal but friendly.

The location is fine, sitting close to the top of the Spanish Steps.

Hotels such as these must surely have to move with the times.  The level of aging guests who love their formality and stuffiness must be diminishing.  The hotels will increasingly be filled with “last minute” cheap deals unless they undergo reinvention and appeal to the new luxury traveller.

The hotel was fine as a substitute for our preferred option of the Russie but we wouldn’t go back. The hotel did nothing wrong.  It's just not special.
