Hong Kong - Ritz Carlton
Spring 2005
Frank's view
The Ritz Carlton in Hong Kong is a stand-alone building opposite that world famous landmark, The Bank of China tower. I would describe the hotel as compact, unlike the sprawling Mandarin Oriental a few blocks away. Its lobby and bar are grand. However unless you book an expensive luxury suite, don’t look to swing your cat in one of the deluxe bedrooms.
The bedrooms are comparable in size to most London hotel rooms; compact, or tiny to you and I.
Probably the most ludicrous room service offering I have ever come across is offered by the Ritz Carlton in Hong Kong.
Imagine the scenario. You are soaking in a steamy bath lapping up the lavish hospitality of Ritz Carlton, but something is missing to make your evening complete; fine cognac and a large Cuban cigar.
My eyes were drawn to an invitation thoughtfully placed close to your bath. Your “butler” will bring the cigar and cognac of your choice to you in your bath, for your enjoyment, whilst you bathe.
All very well, but, the bathroom is fully enclosed, windowless and marginally smaller than the size of a standard double bed. Within minutes you would either choke on the smoke or shower as the room's sprinklers joined the party
The bar / lounge area is spacious and a good central meeting point in Central. The hotel works well if people you are doing business with are happy to come to you, but late nights out are highly recommended. By the time you return to “crash out” the evening’s alcohol consumption should ensure you are oblivious to the miniscule proportions of you hotel cell…unless of course you fancy a night in with a cigar.
