New York - The Greenwich Hotel
Spring 2009
Frank's view
Exquisite
“We don’t want to pay $9 for a bag of peanuts either. All snacks and soft-drinks in the minibar are complimentary, so please, help yourself” said the mini bar guide.
The mini bar was excessively stocked and the invitation was clearly extended to pig out, not that we did. It was just refreshingly different to visit a hotel which did not fleece every last dime from its guests.
Likewise, the complimentary Internet, with an access code presented to each guest upon check-in.
Robert de Niro’s Greenwich Hotel is exquisitely designed and caringly run, with an attention to detail and thought for each guest, which many hotels would benefit from studying, not least, the awful Gramercy Park Hotel.
A vast amount of reclaimed wood has been used to great effect in both common areas and the rooms, with wooden doors and floors largely stripped and unpolished. The floors are partially covered by rugs and the walls have no pointless pictures. Each room has a large cherry wood bed, which contrasts wonderfully with the light wood floor. Brass angular bedside lights enhance the taste. All room lighting is dimmer controlled.
The bathrooms are particularly cleverly designed and use limited space very efficiently. Grey marble, from mosaic floor to ceiling, each incorporates a deep bath and walk in shower. A Japanese ceramic waste bin enhances the overall effect.
I had opted for a Deluxe Greenwich Room at $695, but would elect one of the corner suites on a subsequent visit, purely because of the extra space for working and view across the Hudson River.
The hotel has a large drawing room with an open fire reserved for guests, and a courtyard for warmer weather.
The real showpiece is the Shibui Spa, which has a swimming pool lit by lanterns under a 250 year old Japanese wood and bamboo roof.
Greenwich Street is just round the corner from Nobu and other fine restaurants. Soho is a few minutes away by taxi. If you are looking for a hotel in that part of town The Greenwich Hotel has the edge over The Mercer.
