Chateau Eza versus La Chevre D’Or
The tiny mountainside village of Eze is home to a heavyweight culinary battle.
La Chevre D’Or clearly wins by some way in the high profile PR and over-hyped reputation stakes. However at the top of the village is the less gauche Chateau Eza which, besides offering very good suites, has an excellent restaurant with fabulous views.
La Chevre D’Or restaurant is ludicrously expensive, with a number of dishes in the 100 euro price range. Pre dinner drinks in the bar include Caviar and a tiny glass champagne charged at 148 euros. A small glass of (very) red wine costs 18 euros. We must admit that the accompanying canapés are excellent.
The dinner bill at Chateau Eza will be half, or less, of the bill at Le Chevre D’Or. The food, however is excellent and the ambience equally good. There are two small private balconies which seat up to six where we have enjoyed a fantastic dinner whilst gazing over towards Cap Ferrat. Our guests on that occasion still rave about the evening as their most enjoyable dining experience.
The wine list is carefully chosen, and although not a bargain, not ludicrously over-priced.
Expect to pay 50 euros + for a decent bottle of Gigondas or Saint Joseph. Our extravagance led us to the 1995 Mont Redon Chateauneuf du Pape at 125 euros, but you don’t have to go that far for a good bottle of wine.
Fois Gras is 30 euros, Carre d’agneau is 40 euros, and Coquille St Jacques 45 euros.
Our preference is clearly for Chateau Eza on all scores, but if you have two nights in Eza you can always try both and decide for yourself.
Brace your wallet!
