London - Christopher's American Grill

Winter 07/08

'...but only if American grill food is your thing'

Christopher’s American Bar & Grill seems to have been here for ever.   Returning for lunch in early 2008, this was my first visit to Christopher’s in what must be at least 10 years.  It hadn’t changed.

Opening in 1991, this is one of Covent Garden’s mainstays. The menu, décor and ambience were exactly as I remembered them. Perhaps the prices have crept up?

Maryland Crab cakes, Maine lobster and New York style steaks (Scottish ‘Buccleuch Estate’ beef actually).

This is essentially an up-market American Diner which is not a cheap option if you go a la carte:

 - Maryland crab cake, red pepper mayo and rocket  - £12.50

 - New York Shrimp cocktail  -  £14.00

 - Grilled 10oz New York strip sirloin steak  - £ 23.00

However, this restaurant is in the heart of Theatre Land where ‘theatre dining’ is very competitive.  Christopher’s offers 2 courses for £15.75.

The food is good but, in typical American style, not a light option.

If authentic American grill food is your bag, this is as authentic as it gets, this side of the Atlantic.
