Venice - Ca'Sagredo
Summer 2008
Frank's view
'great hotel, great position, great food'
Cipriani has had its own complacent way for too long.
This tired, gauche, pompous hotel has been usurped by a new breed of classy hostelry, led by Ca’Sagredo.
Ca’Sagredo opened a year ago in early 2007. Its position is a tourist’s dream, on the canal, opposite the beautiful Rialto market. €1 will whip you to the market and back.
The hotel is the 15th century former home of Famiglia Sagredo and has been carefully restored to accommodate 42 rooms and suites. If possible select a Gran Canal room or suite, rather than a Prestige room. The view really does make a difference.
Visiting in May 2008, the restaurant terrace had no umbrellas to shade you from the midday sun, although they said permission was imminent.
The view over the Grand Canal is breathtaking and so is the food. The chef, Cosimo, produced the most exquisite lunch.
Fritto di Scampetti e Calamaretti Spillo con Tempura di Zucchine Trombetta – (tempura tossed in onions capers and cucumber dressing) at €29, was exceptional.
We then ordered ravioli, the house specialty, which was not on the menu. It was arranged over the freshest, most vibrant green sage leaves.
Both presentation and taste were exceptional. Perhaps it was all enhanced by the wonderful weather and stunning view of the gondolas, the market and architecture from this secluded and beautiful vantage point in the heart of Venice.
Ca’Sagredo has justifiably received rave reviews and is well worth a visit, either to stay or simply have lunch.
