Soller - Ca's Xorc
Summer 2008
Frank's view
'all that's best about Mallorca'
Ca’s Xorc – 1km said the sign, by an unmade track, on the winding road from Soller to Deia.
We proceeded with suspicion and utmost caution as the bends became ever tighter. Increasingly relieved that the car hire company had failed to find anything larger than a Seat Leon, I still couldn’t take a couple of the bends without a three point turn.
Ca’s Xorg (prounced Chork) is a small hotel, one of Mallorca's 'Hotel Agroturismo', with magnificent gardens, in a truly beautiful setting. The hotel has only 12 rooms, and in reality only 5 are particularly desirable, as these have private terraces or balconies.
There are two large rooms with no view which are priced at €185. For an additional €115 you can have a large room, some private outdoor space and a spectacular view of the valley towards Port Soller. You really would feel you had drawn the short straw in anything less.
The furnishings are a blend of Spanish and Moroccan and the hotel interior has been beautifully created, but the real piece de resistance is the garden.
The gardens of the hotel comprise of lots of small rooms, which give guests many options to sit in the shade or lie in the sun. The attention to detail in each of the garden rooms is impressive.
At the far end of the land is an infinity pool where you can stay cool in the pool whilst gazing across the Mediterranean.
The restaurant is very good and attracts considerable non-resident reservations.
Oddly, the maitre d’ comes from Staines, just outside London. I’m sure he tires of explaining to the many Brits who visit, how he ended up in rural Mallorca with a Spanish wife who happens to be one of the waitresses.
My starter,
‘carpaccio of Soller prawns with parmesan ice cream’
was unusual but tasty.
The ‘Escalivada tartlet with dried apricots, tataki of tuna, fig marmalade and soy sauce’
was a big hit with my fellow diners. The starters were priced at around €15 -17.
To follow, I chose rolled leg of local lamb with juice of honey and rosemary (€24). The lamb was slightly over-cooked but that’s being very critical. Others shared dorada, the ‘catch of the day’, at €29 per person. The grilled fish was fabulous but enough for four rather than two.
Ca’s Xorc is a truly stunning hotel but don’t expect to secure a good room on a last minute impulse. The fan base of Ca’s Xorc is building rapidly so book well in advance, and hire a small car!
