London - Boxwood Cafe
Summer 2007
Frank's view
'Bring in the decorators.'
The food may be consistently excellent but the décor is almost consistently drab. His flagship restaurant on Hospital Road, London has awful décor. Boxwood café is not much better.
Formerly Vong, Gordon Ramsay took over at the Berkley Hotel around 3 years ago. The rationale is to be much less formal than other Ramsay eateries. One of the specialities is the veal and foie gras burger, but it’s no bargain at £22.50. However, it is very good. Infact, all of the food is very good, as one would expect. Organic smoked salmon with chilli, lime, coriander and grapefruit is simple but inspirational.
Starters range from £10 to £15. Mains run from around 19 for sea bass to £28 for Dorset Blue Lobster. Desserts are fixed at £7.
The other option is the “Taste of Boxwood” menu which offers 6 of the house’s signature dishes for £55.
Expect to pay £30+ for a decent bottle of wine.
Ramsay’s waiting staff are invariably friendly, helpful, efficient and attentive, and the Boxwood is no exception.
Ramsay restaurants never disappoint on the food front, but a bit of life and inspiration on the interior design side wouldn’t go amiss.
