Bangkok - Banyan Tree

Spring 2007
Frank's view

This is probably going to be a very unfair review as we have never actually STAYED in this hotel.

However, we have visited the hotel several times on visits to Bangkok, whilst staying at the Sukhothai next door.

The Banyan Tree in Bangkok is nothing like the famous Banyan Tree in Phuket. The Bangkok hotel is a huge skyscraping 61 floor impersonal business orientated establishment. Upon entering the lobby, the feeling is that you could be in any one of a vast number of hotels around the world, let alone Asia.

The USP (Unique Selling Point) is Vertigo restaurant and the Moon Bar on the hotel roof.  Both, are 61 floors up in the open air and offer virtually no safety barriers.  It is extraordinary.  I doubt if anywhere else in the world has anything like it.  There is just no way Western health and safety authorities would permit it.

It is well worth a visit to the rooftop bar but our one experience of the restaurant was not great.  The food was very average.  Many restaurants in Bangkok offer much better cuisine.

If you are looking for a luxury hotel in Bangkok, the Camel very strongly recommends the Sukhothai next door.  If you are tempted by the Banyan Tree, we suggest you check it out first.
