St Tropez - Bahn Hoi

Summer 2007
Frank's view
'ambience carries it'

This little restaurant is hidden in one of the many narrow lanes of St Tropez.  These streets are exquisite, drawing away from the port toward the Church.  Each one resembles a movie set, lit by original lanterns, and painted in colours the sun has long since diluted.  Their stone floors are divine, some identical, in fact, to the stone on which I once spent a fortune, for a bathroom.

Bahn Hoi like all the other restaurants in these little streets, is one where it is essential to procure a table outside to make the most of the view – the procession of St Tropez tourists. People lose all sense of fashion here.  It’s like being a child, opening up the fancy dress basket and creating an outfit from the smallest, frilliest, glitziest pieces.

The restaurants are so tightly packed into the streets, the alleys becomes refectories where each guest examines the contents of his neighbour’s plat and considers his own choice of cuisine.  Indeed, the waiters all seem to serve randomly between the restaurants.

The food is not exceptional.  Thai style prawns and lettuce – very dull.  The Camel's companion wouldn’t serve that at home.  Thai coconut curry fish soup - fairly good.  The main courses were better. The curry was good and the fish, fair value.

Bahn Hoi is a pleasant change from the traditional French cuisine around St Tropez.  It is not world class Asian cuisine, more good family cooking.
