'Arsy Camel'
In an effort to find authentic excellent Thai cuisine in Bangkok, this camel trawled the Internet in search of recommendations.
Thailand Tatler, and other on-line sources, all raved about Baan Khanitha as one of the best Thai food restaurants in the capital. The temptation was to stick with the proven option of Celadon, the excellent Thai restaurant at the nearby Sukhothai Hotel, but the decision was taken to go local and so we walked the two hundred metres or so down South Sathorn Road to Baan Khanitha.
Entering the large car park with lots of sparkly lights, ‘Happy Eater’ shot through my mind. This is a vast establishment catering for all, from families to aging European males accompanied by local girls (and boys).
Baan Khanitha has three dining areas and clearly tries hard. The restrooms even provide linen hand towels.
A plastic menu offered a large selection of dishes with starters averaging 180 baht and main courses 480 baht.
As is the case everywhere in Thailand, wine is ludicrously expensive. An ordinary Penfolds Shiraz was 3,400 baht.
We ordered spring rolls and concluded that these had been bulk deep fried at the beginning of the month, reheated over the following weeks as required and allowed to soak in old oil in between to enhance that tooth breaking texture.
The remaining dishes weren’t quite so appetising, and no, we won’t be back.
