London - Aubergine
Winter 07/08
Frank's view
'good food let down by ambience and over speedy service'
The tables at Aubergine were once the most sought after in London, giving The Ivy a run for its money on exclusivity and lack of availability. But not anymore. We secured an 8.00pm table on a Monday night with a late call. Is this the legacy of Gordon Ramsay’s abrupt departure and the mystery of the disappearing reservations book? Whatever it is, Aubergine has lost its desirability.
The orchid adorned tables, looking out across the smart wooden floor, were mostly empty. Indeed, by 10.00pm the place was almost deserted.
Whilst both food and accompanying wines were excellent, the co-ordination of delivery was not. The courses landed with Ronald MacDonald pace and the wine glasses accumulated. Champagne was still being sipped as the second course arrived. Several speedy courses later the waiter announced that the soufflé was in the oven. Four wine glasses, in various stages of consumption, jostled for position, in a wino’s wonderland.
The gourmand menu did not disappoint. The food was excellent. Aubergine has clearly dropped off the fashionable London restaurant circuit, so if you’re looking for a late booking and top cuisine, this is a good option.
Just make sure you drink up.
