Udaipur - Aroma
Spring 2008
Frank's view
'Basic, good home cooking'
After a two hour exhaustive tour of the Royal Palace in Udaipur, I suggested lunch, to our guide.
He nodded, and the car pulled up by a large battered sign on the road, which read ‘Restaurant Aroma.’
Nothing in sight resembled a habitable building, let alone a restaurant.
We were led down a path and into a large grassed area, behind a high wall, where a number of tables were laid out, but no diners.
Bhopal Singh Jhala, the owner, offered a warm welcome to us, and our guide.
This camel is often suspicious in such circumstances, wondering whether Mr Jhala is the guide’s father or simply his uncle.
On this occasion the answer is irrelevant.
The Indian cuisine was excellent and, at well under 1000 rupees (£12 / $25) for a banquet, a bargain.
If you’re in Udaipur and looking for a local lunchtime curry, Aroma is a good authentic option.
